What do we stand for?
Our Mission
Phi Sigma Kappa is a lifelong brotherhood dedicated to the betterment of the individual, the university community, and our world, by giving its members opportunities to develop leadership skills, participate in service to others, achieve academic excellence, experience cultural diversity and practice personal integrity.
Phi Sigma Kappa Cardinal Principles
To Promote Brotherhood
Justice, harmony, and brotherly love are essential to the spirit of fraternity. We promise to set an example of true brotherhood not only in our relations with each other, but in our association with people everywhere.
To Stimulate Scholarship
Wisdom comes with learning. Complementing the mission of higher education, we seek to help our members to combine formal and informal learning experience; to more fully appreciate the importance of both theoretical and practical knowledge; and, by broadening their understanding of human relationships, to produce men of wisdom who will be better prepared to make positive contributions to society and all mankind.
To Develop Character
Honor is the basis of fraternal relationships. We resolve to instill in each member a devotion to those values which will guide him to ends that are noble and right, so that in all that he represents and in all that he does, he shall be known as a man of honor who inspires others by his example and thus wins admiration and respect for himself and for Phi Sigma Kappa.
Who can join?
Any student that meets the following basic criteria:
- Is enrolled full time at the University of Minnesota or an area technical or community college
- Is in good personal financial standing
How do I join?
Joining a Fraternity can be a hard decision with so many Greek organizations to choose from. The men of Phi Sigma Kappa like to make the process of joining our organization as easy as possible for students. All you need to do is simply stop by our chapter or come to an event and introduce yourself to one member. We will take it from there!
We will introduce you to every member of our chapter and let you know about any upcoming events that we have coming up. We will give you a tour of our chapter house to give you an idea of what it would be like to live in a Fraternity. You will have the opportunity to talk with our President and Recruitment chair. If you have any questions about our organization do not hesitate to ask. The beginning of this process is really just about us meeting you and you meeting us.
After you have had the opportunity to meet all of the members of the chapter and attend a few events the chapter will notice that you have shown some interest in our organization. If you decide that this is an organization that you would like to join and be a part of for the next four years do not hesitate to tell any of the members that you are thinking about joining.
Once we see that you are interested in joining our organization we bring your name up for a bid in our weekly chapter meeting. Each member of the chapter votes on whether to extend or not to extend a bid to an interested person. Members consider the following when they vote to extend bids:
- Character – Are you a respectable person and someone that they can trust
- Academic History – Do you go to school and are you academically successful
- Personality – Are you someone that will get along with the members of the chapter
- Work Ethic – Are you willing to work towards a goal
- Financial Stability – Will you be able to pay your chapter bill on time
If you are selected to receive a bid you will be presented with a formal invitation to join our organization. At this time you can either accept or decline until a later date. Your bid offer is good throughout the school year and you can accept it at any time. Once you have accepted your bid you will become part of an initiation class.
Once your initiation class is formed you will go through the ritual of association and become an associate member of the chapter. Associate members do not have full membership status until they complete their initiation. Associate members must successfully complete an eight-week new member education program.
After your entire initiation class has completed your new member education program you will go through initiation. Initiation is a two-day secret ritual that will take place on a Friday and Saturday. Initiation is usually held once in the fall and once in the spring. Hazing of any form will NOT be tolerated at any part of the membership process. Hazing is against all Minnesota laws as well as against any Grand Chapter of Phi Sigma Kappa regulations. Please report any hazing activity to the President of the chapter. Once you have successfully completed initiation you will be a full member of the chapter.
What are the rules?
We follow the rules and regulations of our Grand Chapter’s bylaws, the bylaws of the local chapter as well as all city, state and federal laws.
